Sickness, holidays and late arrivals thanks to the South West trains strike meant that the office today was unusually quiet; and pretty sluggish too, as people tried to shake off the last remnants of the long weekend.
One thing that the Bank Holiday weekend does lend itself to, apart from trying to solve a series of bafflingly complicated DIY dilemmas, is thinking about a new job – so we led our morning homepage with a timely article offering some useful tips to help you decide about your next career move.
Getting your CV up to speed is, of course, one of the first things you should sort out before even thinking about stepping up the career ladder. People laugh at the simplicity of advice such as ‘Get the name of the person you’re writing to correct’, but if my personal experience is anything to go by, it’s a line that needs to be repeated again and again. When I was an editor of a couple of consumer internet magazines down in Bournemouth, the amount of applications I received with various horrific attempts at spelling my none-too-complicated surname (‘Brookman’) was staggering. Whether rightly or wrongly, many employers, who get inundated with hopeful CVs every day of the week, use such embarrassing typos as a means of whittling down a huge list of potential candidates to a manageable few. Speaking as someone who has made their own CV bloopers from time to time, the best idea is to show your finished resume to a few family members or friends before even thinking about sending it anywhere – a different pair of eyes can be a godsend when you’re glazed over from seeing the same few chunks of text for hours on end.
Yesterday’s Bank Holiday meant that the usual Monday morning planning meeting was shunted to today. Events to look out for in the coming week include the home nations in action on Saturday in the first round of Euro 2008 matches; the cinema release of the remake of The Wicker Man (starring Nicolas Cage) and the MTV Video Music awards. And don’t be surprised if relations with you and your partner are a bit ‘tense’ tomorrow – Wednesday marks, apparently, the worst day in the year for relationship rows. It may be a good idea to schedule some quality ‘me’ time instead…
