I was disappointed to read in the papers today that Portuguese star Nani has declared he will no longer display any tricks on the field.
For me, the highlight of last Sunday’s FA Cup tie between Manchester United and Arsenal was an exquisite piece of improvisation by the young winger.
The United star showed wonderful control as he juggled the ball masterfully between feet, knees and head while being harried and kicked by a tracking Arsenal player.
The sublime moves did not go down well with the Gunners though; first William Gallas scythed him down and then, in his post-match interview, Arsene Wenger vented his fury at the "humiliating" actions of Nani.
When the French coach talked about a lack of respect you might have thought he was referring to the heinous act that was Emmanuel Adebayor trying to cheat his opponents by falling to the ground after no contact.
But alas, no, he was talking about Nani’s trickery.
And today the Portuguese star said he will cease to play in this way in future so as to avoid upsetting such purveyors of the beautiful game as Monsieur Wenger.
"In Portugal I have done this many times, but it is only because it is an entertaining spectacle and not because I disrespect my rivals," he told the Daily Mail.
So while blatant cheating and dangerous tackles may be tolerated in this country, retaining possession of the ball in a creative way is simply unacceptable.
Is it any wonder there is such a dearth of footballing talent in England with this depressing attitude?
I suspect that while the Portuguese winger’s tricks cause more upset than the antics of Adebayor and Gallas, it will be a long time before we see an Englishman with ball skills to match Nani’s precocious talents.

It seems to be bit sellfishness aroused from the Arsenal players because they were lacking such a talent which Nani has.If Wenger consider this as a disrespect how can u name Gallas kicking as .Its frustrating understandable on the otherhand Nani its Talent should understand u gunners.

Ridiculous. Monsieur Wenger is simply whinging after a brilliant united display and a surprisingly stale one by Arsenal, who seemed to beileve that kiciking out at Nani was the best way to get some consolation from the game. The only humiliating thing about that game was the scoreline!
I think this comes down to the fact that the player concerned is not in the Arsenal squad. To say a player is disrespectful as they are "seen to be showboating" is not only an insult to football, but a contridiction of Arsenal Football Club. Player\’s for decades have been using tricks and skill, adding their own flair and improvising to put their own stamp on a game. It goes right back to the nutmeg…..Technical flair will always continue to progress and the more there is the better the standard of football we will have. And in turn will rub off onto our youngsters for future generations (even if they end up playing in the reserves)
Now last time I checked, there was supposed to be an element of sportsmanship in our beautiful game. So I could understand, even sympathise with Mr Wenger if say, a decision had gone against them. Or maybe a bad tackle had been made. The thing is Arsenal have always tried to play the most entertaining and attractive football of the last decade. An art in the unbeatable season!
So what about the times Arsenal have scored through such art or improvisation? When Henry took that quick free-kick against Chelsea and eventually won the game? Is this not classed as disrespectful? Or when Pires scored a back heel? Should he have stopped, thought about it and then gave it an old fashioned toe poke into the corner of the net? It\’s joke. This always happens when they feel things going against them. They got hammered, admit it, get over it and focus on the next game. Today\’s result versus Birmingham just shows they are crumbling. Gallas\’ reaction to Clichy\’ for giving the penalty deserves his band taking off him. Leaders are their to support through thick and thin, yet he acted like a baby without his rusk\’s! This is where the slide start\’s…
But back to the point in hand….
Regardless of whether your Wigan or Wycombe, Premier League or Pub league, please continue to demonstrate and express yourself freely on the pitch. After all its only a game which should also be enjoyed with a laugh.
I am a ManU fan, and am proud to be, monsieur wenger is just a clown, and he is also jealous that he is not having such talents in his team. Arsenal in the past have done great things, i.e unbeaten throughout the season, skills from players like henry(quick freekick and he scored), pires, berkamp etc, but u never see the likes of Fergie whinging, so a word of advice for wenger, shut up and get on with your own work and leave the united players to be, please am begging players like nani, ronaldo and other skillfull players in the prem league to do what they do best and ignore clowns like wenger.

And about GallasHe is not fit to be a captain. I think he is too eager to prove to Chelsea that he made the right decision by leaving them to join Arsenal. He shouldn\’t have played in yesterday\’s match in the first place if the FA had for once done the right thing and sanctioned him for kicking Nani. What he did at Birmingham was very embarrassing. I think Arsenal are showing signs of cracking and if they don\’t bow out of the Champions League, they risk finishing the season with ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. my comments were read out on sky sports news.
i argued that in that it was very harsh to accuse nani of "cheating" or "showboating" in taht particualr incident. if u watch teh clip, he is running back towards his goal, all-be-it close to the touchline. but had he tried to take the cball downa nd control it, he cud have mis-controlled the ball in which case he would have left a 1-on-1 with van der sar – so my point was that there was very little else he cud have done apart from keep the ball in the air ..brilliantly i might add!!

there was nothing wrong in what nani did, it is not illegal to juggle the football and do some tricks. if arsenal cannot cope with that fact…its there problem. even after the match the comentators agreed with me. Gallas has his own issues. why did he kick nani.. was he fustrated that nani could get past him?….or did he jus want to take his anger out on him? it is a fact that Man united were a much better team and played so much better than they did. Why don\’t we ban showboating and make 2 footed challenges, stamps, headbutts, punches etc legal. After all, their would have been less publicity and less of a carry on if he had turned round a whacked somebody.
