Our new gaming columnist’s piece on how Half-Life revolutionised the computer game industry reminded me of another contribution its creators, Valve, have made to popular culture.
Much has been written about Portal already – a title which took everyone by surprise last year and wowed punters with its brilliant gameplay and incredibly witty script (a computer game that’s actually genuinely funny – unbelievable). The game picked up numerous industry awards and is still being talked about on plenty of forums and message boards.
For me, though, what Portal will be ultimately remembered for is the amazing song that plays after you finish Level 19. Put simply, it has to be the best ending of any computer game ever. It’s catchy, poignant, emotional, original, funny and intelligent… just so much better, on so many levels, than the half-hearted musical pap which dominates so many games these days.
If you haven’t heard it yet, here it is in all its glory (mild spoiler alert – if you haven’t finished Portal yet, you may want to wait until you do before clicking). Add a comment below if you agree with me or alternatively believe there’s been a better use of a song in a computer game.
