Shocking news in the papers today; Dennis the Menace’s harmless brand of anarchy in The Beano has been toned down since the late 1980s, over fears that his treatment of Walter the Softie could be classified as ‘gay-bashing’.
‘It’s political correctness gone mad!’ is now a massively clichéd and over-used phrase, but it does seem apt here. John Midgeley, co-founder of The Campaign Against Political Correctness, sums up the anger: ‘It’s a great shame that in recent years this national institution has been watered-down to placate a tiny minority of humourless, do-gooding adults’.
The censoring of Dennis prompts another question: what other popular classics have been watered down and altered without our knowledge over the years?

Have these people got nothing better to do?
I grew up reading The Beano and was even a member of the Dennis The Menace Fan Club (got a badge and everything!). Of all the stories I read over the years, none of them inspired me to become a "gay basher", set my dog on the postman or wear a red and black stripey jumper.
These do-gooders need to get a sense of humour and stop taking the fun out of our lives.
Can you imagine just how boring and politically correct society is going to be in say 100 years time. I find myself despairing of this modern world we are making for ourselvesand hanker back to the 60`s/70`s which may have had its problems but at least you could have a real belly laugh along the way. "Stepford Wives" more like "Stepford Civilisations".

yeah, we all know that the world or at least here in the UK that all this political correctness has gone mad. What about Tom & Gerry? They were at eachothers throats all the time and as a kid I watched it all the time, didn\’t do me any harm. Bring back the old bad Dennis he was funny back then. The thing is, us adults dont see all this stuff through a child\’s mind, its fun for them, but now sadly we are taking away the laughter of a child.
Personally I think toning down children’s cartoons and comics such as Dennis the menace isn\’t going far enough. Political correctness should be at a stage where people can no longer sing such songs as \’I can sing a rainbow\’ for its obvious homophobic attitude\’, and the sooner chess pieces are changed to blue and red as apposed to black and white in order to prevent racial stereotypes the better. This is the 21st Century ladies and gentleman, I rephrase, women and men, a lady or a gentleman may be perceived to offend the nature of certain types of males, or females, so should not be used. <——- Is this truly the sort of world we want our children to be brought up in, a society (a supposedly democratic and free society, where freedom of speech is a founding principal) fearful of speaking its mind in case a non-pc comment is spoken??? The problem is the fact that the only people who believe in PC are those that have the power to do anything about it. It appears these \’educated\’ numbnuts have been educated from the same book that apparantly says everything can be offensive and not to question anything. The problem won\’t go away anytime soon either. From my experience at university it appears students no longer think for themselves and have opinions. They are happy just to do and think whatever their lecturers, the tv or the radio tell them to do, and not to question anything that is going on. It\’s hard to believe that the students of today are going to be the power of tomorrow.

I honestly can\’t believe this. there are so many things wrong with this…
1: When does the Beano ever say Walter is gay? yes, he\’s sensitive and effeminate, but saying that that makes him gay just proves that the buerocrats who said that know nothing about gay people. They are only interested in their own straight white conservative, 9 til 5 white-collar jobs, and the free time they spend making lists of ways to remove anything interesting from the world. (Something is happenin\’ here, but you don\’t know what it is, do you, Mr. Jones?) Besides, in some of the comics, as well as the TV series, Walter has a girlfriend called Matilda.
2: Even without the whole debate on Walter\’s sexuality, Dennis\’s treatment of him can hardly be described as "bashing" him. Its easy to see that Walter is quite a spiteful character, particularly towards Dennis, so most of Dennis\’s pranks (Which are fairly harmless anyway,) are usually done because he was provoked by Walter.

Some people are just childished! Comics like Dennis has been around for years, before alot of us were even born. Why should classic, good comincs be watered-downed?
